Introduction

The Bachelor of Arts in English prepares students for careers in a variety of fields by helping them develop critical thinking skills and exploring what it means to be a thoughtful citizen of the 21st century. Not only will students be inspired to read, critically analyze, and create written works of art, but they will also be inspired to search for ways to positively change the world. While a B.A. in English can be a springboard for graduate work in Englishlawinterdisciplinary studies,teaching, or political science, students with an English degree can also work in the following fields:

  • Grant writing
  • Technical writing
  • Editing and publishing
  • Marketing and advertising
  • Public relations
  • Politics
  • Teaching (in many private, parochial, or charter schools)

Our online classes allow students to interact with faculty and peers who value creativity, critical thinking, and engaging conversations about writing and literature. All required coursework has options for asynchronous online delivery.

Mission

The primary mission of the English degree is to help students sharpen their critical and aesthetic insights and promote their understanding of the human condition as revealed in literature.  Additionally, we strive to provide a strong foundation in subject matter for prospective teachers of English in the elementary/secondary schools and to equip majors for graduate study in English or related Humanities fields.

Student Learning Objectives

Students will demonstrate the ability to

  1. Critically interpret primary texts
  2. Listen attentively and respond intelligently to instructors’ and classmates’ ideas and build a community of readers and writers
  3. Recognize and practice writing as a complex process that involves drafting, peer reviews, and revision
  4. Analyze and practice writing in multiple genres through the lenses of craft and technique.
  5. Use understanding of literature to think and write critically about contemporary issues
  6. Understand and historically contextualize the values and language in diverse texts across time/literary periods/cultures

Western New Mexico University offers two concentration options for our English degrees:

  • Literature
  • Writing

Both Concentrations require the completion of 36 credit hours of English courses and a minor.
